Slam Stewart was well known for his gimmick of humming and playing his bass in octave unison, which is featured prominently throughout this compilation of two studio sessions. The bulk of the music features Stewart leading a trio with pianist Johnny Guarneri (who wrote 6 originals for the date) and drummer Sammy Weiss; stronger are their interpretations of standards like "That Old Black Magic" and "My Blue Heaven." The final two tracks are by a quartet with Erroll Garner, guitarist Mike Bryan, and drummer Hal West, playing the obscure "Dark Eyesky" ("Dark Eyes," which he had previously recorded with Art Tatum in 1944) and "Play Fiddle Play." While this rather low-key record won't likely appeal to many jazz fans, followers of Slam Stewart will be rewarded by acquiring it.

Nancy Wilson displays all her talents on this 1967 Capitol release. On the blues end of things, she turns the lights down low with a smoldering cover of Lil Green's classic "In the Dark" and swings it hard and brass-heavy on the Joe Williams/Count Basie number "Alright, Okay, You Win." And for some of her patented ballad heaven, there are stunners like Michel Legrand's "Watch What Happens" and Lil Armstrong's forlorn standard "Just for a Thrill." To flesh out this relatively traditional program, Wilson keeps up with the times on mod pop reworkings of the Willie Dixon-penned Little Walter hit "My Babe" and another Joe Williams favorite, "Smack Dab in the Middle."

This album (reissued by C5 Records on CD) is the equivalent in Shapiro's career to what Dusty in Memphis was to Dusty Springfield's career the single most important, mature, concise, and direct statement of who she was as an artist. The sound, surprisingly, isn't really terribly country in nature. Indeed, parts of it, like "I Cried Myself to Sleep," could almost qualify as pop-soul. "It's My Party" in its original version is less whiny and mannered than the Lesley Gore version. The rest runs the gamut from vintage pop to Dixieland influences, all well sung and extremely well played. A masterpiece, and a most unexpected one, from this underrated talent.

This debut solo release by Allan Holdsworth has an "in the raw," coarsely presented, jam-session quality complete with warts and all, as well as real gems of jazz fusion shining through. A first hearing of this release in its vinyl version might provoke laughter at how really bad it sounds compared to Holdsworth's other releases as well as his playing with other groups. As it turns out, Holdsworth himself abhors this release (considering it "a real terrible disaster"), and has taken legal action and had it removed from production for several reasons. The original label used rehearsal tapes to compile it, deeming it unnecessary to finance real sessions.

What does a woman do when she gets the blues? If she is blues wizard Rory Block, she gets out her guitar and starts singing and playing until her spirits lift. That is exactly what she does on this 1995 Rounder recording. The CD features her son, Jordan Block Valdina, on vocals with her, along with Annie Raines on harmonica and Warren Bernhardt on piano and harmonica. Together, they reach back in time for some tried-and-true blues, as well as one original from the pen of the blues diva. "Take My Heart Away" is Block's own contribution to the recording, which won her a W.C. Handy award in 1996 for Best Traditional Blues Album.

Superpickers is designed as something of a super jam session, with Atkins joined by a bunch of Nashville cats, including Johnny Gimble, Charlie McCoy, Weldon Myrick, Hargus Robbins, and many others. This brings the album close to the definition of an old-fashioned pickers match where the guys all sit around, emphasizing the playing instead of either the tune or feel. Superpickers is still plenty smooth and relaxed it was cut near the end of this kind of crossover country easy listening but it's so solipsistic it's often straight-up cornball, whether it's the goofy organ and horns on the opening "Paramaribo" or the joshing around on "Fiddlin' Around" or even the mock-blues opening riff on "Just Another Rag." Once the crew all settles in, however, this flows as sweet and easy as a backyard creek, a bottle of bourbon, or a jar of molasses choose your poison, it's all here for you.

Africa/Brass is the eighth studio album by jazz musician John Coltrane, released in 1961 on Impulse! Records, catalogue A-6. The sixth release for the fledgling label and Coltrane's first for Impulse!, it features Coltrane's working quartet augmented by a larger ensemble to bring the total number of participating musicians to 21. Its big band sound, with the unusual instrumentation of French horns and euphonium, presented music very different from anything that had been associated with Coltrane to date.

Cal Tjader's era-defining mixture of Afro-Cuban rhythms and mainstream jazz solos undergoes a bit of a horizontal expansion in these 1956 sessions. The tracks are often longer than on previous albums, finally taking advantage of the logistics of the LP, and as a result, both the Latin and jazz elements benefit. Tenor saxophonist Brew Moore gets extended chances to blow in an easy-grooving Getz-like manner on several tracks, and on "I Love Paris," Luis Miranda (congas) and Bayardo Velarde (timbales) engage in some spirited percussion battles over the vamping of the brothers Duran (Manuel on piano and Carlos on bass). Everything cooks in a bright yet disciplined manner, and Tjader's elliptical, swinging vibes preside genially over the ensemble.

Helen Merrill dates are always something special. This set for Metrojazz, which has been reissued as a Verve CD, matches the cool-toned yet inwardly heated singer with an all-star sextet arranged by Quincy Jones and featuring solos by trumpeter Kenny Dorham and either Frank Wess or Jerome Richardson on flute and tenor. The repertoire includes versions of "You Go to My Head" and "Just Squeeze Me" sung in French, a couple of numbers by producer Leonard Feather, Duke Ellington's "The Blues From Black, Brown and Beige," and a haunting rendition of "The Thrill Is Gone."

Without knowing anything about Tiwayo, one could imagine him with an extraordinary family tree: the secret son of Nina Simone and Marvin Gaye and a kissing cousin of the Black Keys or Terence Trent D'Arby. Infused by the classic scope of 60's and 70's blues, gospel, soul, rock and reggae, Tiwayo's voice has been forged by sleepless nights spent singing in subways 'til sunrise and spending hard time on the road in the USA and Europe. Lauded even prior to this, his first album, he has played shows with Curtis Harding, Cody Chesnutt, Patrice and most recently with Norah Jones and Marcus Miller.
