When reviewing music by a composer that is new to me I make it a policy not to read the inlay notes of the disc so as not to come to any preconceived attitudes regarding the music. So my first impressions of these "Twelve Divertimentis" by James Oswald played by Rob Mackillop on a 18th century wire-strung guitar was that of the composer not having a formal musical education but of a simple but talented minstrel perhaps from Scotland or Ireland who, given the rustic feel of his music, with its dance like movements, was employed to provide the music for local village dances.

Hansheinz Schneeberger celebrated his 90th birthday on 16 October 2016. The present albums are being released to mark the occasion: they document a fascinating spectrum of outstanding works, both chamber music and concertos, by Swiss composers between 1911 and 1943 thus covering the shift from the last manifestations of Romanticism to a somewhat modern tonal language that does not altogether deny its Romantic roots.

Nikolai Lugansky's 2018 release on Harmonia Mundi of Rachmaninov's 24 Preludes consists of the two sets of the Preludes, Op. 23 and the Preludes, Op. 32, but opens with the most famous (or infamous) of all of his solo keyboard pieces, the Prelude in C sharp minor. Originally published in Morceaux de fantaisie, Op. 3, the Prelude in C sharp minor has always seemed to exist independently from the others in the series, and early on became a greatest hit for Rachmaninov; yet because he was always obligated to play it as an encore at his concerts, he came to resent its extraordinary popularity and considered it an albatross.

Like Angela Hewitt, Andrea Bacchetti has carved something of a reputation for performing Bach on the piano, but whereas Hewitt’s Baroque ‘byways’ have headed to France for Couperin and Rameau, Bacchetti has returned to his Italian roots and now adds Domenico Scarlatti to sonata discs of Galuppi and Marcello. Not for him, however, an essay in cherry-picking some of the Neapolitan’s tastiest morsels. In collaboration with Mario Marcarini, Bacchetti has created new editions of Scarlatti’s works from manuscripts housed in Venice.

Composer in constant rediscovery, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco never as in this period has attracted the attention and interest of valiant virtuous and refined musicians. Among these, definitely the guitarist Angelo Marchese, a musician able to give life and soul to this repertoire of the '900 that shows not only an author of the first magnitude of the international composition but who goes to rediscover alongside well-established masterpieces such as the Suite Escamarran , authentic gems like the Passacaglia dedicated to Pope Roncalli or the brilliant game of Variations through the centuries.

Venice, Rome and Naples are the places of origin of the presented pieces - places of an equally flourishing and brilliantly bright musical past. "Palpiti del Cuore" (Palpitations of the Heart) traces these historic locales' musical development across the glorious Italian Baroque era. The young ensemble La Botta Forte plays vocal and instrumental music from the beginnings of the 'stile moderno' in the 17th c. to the High Baroque in the 18th c. Each ensemble musician is proficient on several instruments, that flexibility allowing for a greatly expanded repertoire.

Knudåge Riisager (1897-1974) holds a special place in Danish music, enriching it with an extra dimension of spirituality and pithiness. Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and conductor Andreas Delfs here present two key works in Riisagers catalogue, one of which clearly represented a turning point in his output, namely his orchestral reworking of a selection of Carl Czernys piano etudes for his and Harald Landers ballet Etudes. The other heralded a stylistic change and ranks as a highly personal contribution to the concerto genre Riisagers Violin Concerto is played here by Danish violinist Ian van Rensburg. Van Rensburg has been first concert master of the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra since 1993. He also enjoys a versatile international career as an active soloist, chamber musician, and teacher.

After 1933 nobody had the opportunity to hear this opera. Then the Osnabrück Music Theater rediscovered Das Lied der Nacht by Hans Gál and performed it in 2017. This late-romantic opera to a text by Karl Michael von Levetzow premiered in 1926, but since its composer was of Jewish origin, the Nazis prohibited stage productions of it. During his later years Hans Gál was doubly forgotten: as one of the many Jewish artists who were forced into exile by the Fascists and as a conservative "very-latest romanticist" pursuing paths laid out by Brahms and Richard Strauss.

Former TNT frontman, Tony Harnell, is teaming up with Primal Fear and Allen/Lande prolific guitarist Magnus Karlsson again for the release of the much anticipated third Starbreaker album. Starbreaker started as Harnell's side project while he was still in TNT. He was initially working on a solo record, but with guitarist Magnus Karlsson, former TNT drummer John Macaluso, and bassist Fabrizio Grossi, they formed Starbreaker. The band recorded its first self-titled studio album in 2005, and it was released on July 13th in the same year. In late 2007, with Starbreaker as his main musical project, he flew to Sweden to write the bulk of the songs for the new album with Karlsson, and started recording the new songs at the end of the year…

Skaldowie, a Cracow, Poland, rock group, was particularly popular from the 1960s to the 1980s. With their musical training and proximity to the folklore-rich area of Podhale, many of their tracks were a fusion of rock, folk, and classical music. Skaldowie formed in 1965 in Kraków (Cracow). Its founding members Andrzej and Jacek Zieliński's maternal grandparents hailed from Zakopane in the High Tatras, and both boys enjoyed spending time there and hiking in the mountains. Many of their compositions included references to folk music from the region. Skaldowie caused a stir in 1972 with the extent to which motifs from the Goral music of Podhale featured on their groundbreaking album Krywań, Krywań (Kriváň is a mountain on the Slovak side of the High Tatras).
