Blending the literate and expressive lyrical style of a classic singer/songwriter with music rooted in indie rock, Joseph Arthur is a well-respected songwriter and performer whose work has impressed critics as well as artists such as Peter Gabriel and Michael Stipe. Arthur's original goal was to become a hotshot bass player, but exposure to Bob Dylan and Kurt Cobain prompted him to take up songwriting, and in 1996, he self-released an EP that made its way to Peter Gabriel, who signed Arthur to his Real World label. 1997's challenging Big City Secrets and 2000's rootsy Come to Where I'm From impressed critics and discriminating listeners, and 2004's Our Shadows Will Remain found him digging even deeper into his confessional tales. With 2007's Let's Just Be, Arthur launched his own record label, Lonely Astronaut, giving him greater control over his music as he recorded idiosyncratic projects such as 2013's The Ballad of Boogie Christ and 2014's Lou (the latter a collection of Lou Reed covers).

Just out of their teens, it seems Copenhagen's Iceage have only added to the anxiety and tension that made their debut album, New Brigade, so compelling. But now, they're challenging their raging emotions instead of simply expressing them. You're Nothing, Iceage's sophomore album, is the sound of a band pushing their singular mix of punk, Goth, hardcore, and post-punk to even further extremes. It's overwhelming how many ways Iceage have found to write the short aggressive rock song.

This is an album of vocal raags from the North Indian classical tradition. As the liner notes explain, classical singing in India is becoming rare and people are turning to archival recordings to satisfy their desire for it. Such a state of affairs makes a contemporary album like this one all the more valuable.

2013 covers album from the veteran Alt-Rock singer/songwriter. Among the 12 tracks, Lanegan tackles Hall & Oates' "She's Gone", Nancy Sinatra's "You Only Live Twice", Nick Cave's "Brompton Oratory", and Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife", and more. In a statement, Lanegan described the project's emotional significance, "When I was a kid in the late sixties and early seventies, my parents and their friends would play the records of Andy Williams, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and Perry Como, music with string arrangements and men singing songs that sounded sad whether they were or not. At home my folks were also listening to country music, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, George Jones and Vern Gosdin were some of our favorites. For a long time I've wanted to make a record that gave me the same feeling those old records did, using some of the same tunes I loved as a kid and some that I've loved as I have gotten older. This record is it, Imitations".

Scott Fields is a leading guitarist and composer in avant-jazz and New Music. Jeffrey Lependorf is a composer of contemporary chamber music and opera. He is also a certified master of the shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese bamboo flute, and has helped create a new repertoire of music for this ancient instrument. In Everything is in the instructions, they perform new works for guitar and shakuhachi that combine written and improvised material. Don’t look for anything related to so-called ‘world music’ or some new agey concept here. This is the exciting combination of two major musical personalities, and definitely music for the 21st century, where sound, silence and structures are masterly entwined to create something entirely new and original.

Tatsuya Nakatani's solo percussion performances are breathtaking presentations that balances beautiful sonic expression with intense percussion work. His playing seems effortless, whether creating slow sound chambers or moving at seemingly impossible speeds using extended techniques and inventive uses of bowls, bows, cymbals and drum heads. He is a marvel to watch perform, and his playing translates to captivating and unexpected music.

This record kicks from the very beginning, in a way you would’t expect when looking at the cover: A white man in a brightly glittered suit and hat holding his alto sax. A posture somewhere between a down-and-out tv series cop and James Last. If you open the fold out cover the misleading signals continue: A b/w picture of an intellectual (the same man) and his flute; this might fit really well for Rachmaninoff!

It is easy to think of saxophonist Ari Brown as the heir to the late, great Chicago tenorists Von Freeman and Fred Anderson but that would not be a fair assessment. Far more than a successor, Brown is the youngest and remaining member of a powerfully unique musical triumvirate. His idiosyncratic style is equally appropriate to both provocative avant-garde explorations and the laid back swagger of hard bop.

Progressive Rock | Karisma Records #KAR080

Norwegian act D'ACCORD was formed in early 2008. Just one year later they were ready with their self-titled debut album, a production that eventually led to the band signing with Karisma Records. Their first album as a signed band was "Helike" from 2011, and in the early spring of 2014 D'Accord returned with their third CD, "D'Accord III", their second album to be released through Karisma Records. If you subscribe to the notion that just about all music worth appreciating was made in the late 60's and early 1970's, D'Accord will be a band that merits a check at this point. They have a bonafide vintage sound, and pulls in details from what, I suspect, is a wide variety of bands with fairly different stylistic expressions to make their own vintage rock stew.

Excellent debut studio disc by this awesome, way-kool, top-shelf, blues-based, retro, hard rock band featuring the outstanding vocal talents of Jimmy Kunes (Cactus/American Mafia) and Bill Leverty (Firehouse) on guitar along with Keith Horne on bass & Andre LaBelle on drums. F.T.E. have landed and are on a mission to Keep the Rock alive. Kunes is a legitimate musical disciple of the 70s rock vocal god along with guitar man Leverty laying down the killer riffage/mojo complete with the rhythm section of Horne & LaBelle laying down a serious rock solid groove. The Flood The Engine disc is a prime slice of vintage rock n' roll for your soul that is Highly recommended to fans of classic rock mojo.

Like Angela Hewitt, Andrea Bacchetti has carved something of a reputation for performing Bach on the piano, but whereas Hewitt’s Baroque ‘byways’ have headed to France for Couperin and Rameau, Bacchetti has returned to his Italian roots and now adds Domenico Scarlatti to sonata discs of Galuppi and Marcello. Not for him, however, an essay in cherry-picking some of the Neapolitan’s tastiest morsels. In collaboration with Mario Marcarini, Bacchetti has created new editions of Scarlatti’s works from manuscripts housed in Venice.
